What is an AI chatbot for a website?

An AI chatbot for a website is a chat widget (or agent) visitors open on your site that answers from your knowledge base and can take next steps such as capturing a lead or requesting a booking. It is not a phone receptionist by default, and it is not a script that only fires canned lines with no file behind it.

On our site we describe the product job as answering with knowledge-base context, then acting: book a slot, capture contact info, or route an urgent case. The visitor stays in the browser chat (and sometimes SMS or social DMs on the same product story). A separate category answers the ringing phone. If you are shopping "website chatbot," you are buying the on-site channel first.

The useful half of the definition is the knowledge base. Most answers should come from that file, with the model used when synthesis is needed rather than as the first stop for every hours question. When we priced serving those answers, a typical FAQ exchange was short (a couple of turns), while booking and insurance threads ran longer. The widget still has to finish from content you own. If the bot invents a price or a staff name, the definition failed.

So the short test: does it sit on the site, pull from your current answers, and complete a known action when the visitor asks? That is a website AI chatbot. A phone AI receptionist is a different channel with a different bill and a different setup. Buy the channel that matches where your strangers already show up.
